When a baby has either a short or tight piece of connective tissue that attaches their gums to their upper lip, it is known as a lip-tie. All babies have this triangle-shaped tissue between their gums and upper lip, but this tissue is pulled more tightly for some babies.

A lip-tie forms before a baby is born and usually disappears before birth. It is unclear what causes a lip-tie to form. If a child is born with a lip-tie, it usually corrects itself as the child gets older.

Can a Lip-Tie Be Treated?

It is best to talk to your pediatric dentist if your child has a lip-tie. There is a procedure known as a frenotomy where a doctor can separate the connective tissue from the baby's upper lip. You and your dentist can determine whether this is right for your child.

Carousel Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics frequently does second opinion consultations. Theexterior photo of carousel pediatric dentistry & orthodontics | pediatric dentist second opinion American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) issued a statement on this topic, noting that “second opinions are one avenue for additional information regarding health care issues. Parents frequently seek additional information and/or other opinions in order to address their child’s health care needs and make informed decisions.”

Why Should You Get A Second Opinion in Apple Valley?

Their statement goes on to say that second opinions for minor medical issues are usually not necessary. However, they do recommend getting a second opinion if:

  • The parent or patient doesn’t agree with the diagnosis or treatment plan given by the healthcare provider
  • The patient has multiple medical issues
  • The patient is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease
  • There’s no improvement in a patient’s condition
  • There’s a communication barrier between the patient and the provider
  • The patient has extensive oral care needs or high costs, making treatment inaccessible

The AAPD has also issued an opinion about how to go about the secondary diagnosis process. There are several ways to go about the second opinion diagnosis, and there’s debate between providers about the best way to do this.

A parent or patient can give the second provider the original provider’s diagnosis, records, and test results, but this information might influence the second provider’s opinion. The disadvantage of not doing this, and giving the second provider no information from the first provider, is that the second provider will likely have to redo tests, which will cost the parent or patient more money.

A third option is for the parent to provide the second provider with test results, without the first doctor’s diagnosis or treatment recommendations, thereby creating the conditions for an unbiased option, but with less likelihood of redoing tests.

Get a Second Opinion at Carousel Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

If you are a parent looking for a pediatric dentist in Apple Valley, MN, or are seeking out a second-opinion dentist, we’d be happy to talk to you and set up a consultation. If you have any questions about the second opinion process, we’d be happy to answer them.

What Services Does a Pediatric Dentist in Apple Valley Offer?

As pediatric dentists, Dr. Katie and Dr. Kyle completed two years of specialist training in pediatric dentistry beyond dental school. They are personable, caring professionals who possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise to meet all of your child's individual oral health needs.

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases affecting children but is also highly preventable.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry states that children should see the dentist when they get their first baby tooth but no later than their first birthday. It's essential to work together to protect baby teeth until they're ready to come out on their own.

Baby teeth play the essential role of holding space for permanent teeth until they are ready to emerge. The early loss of baby teeth can have long-term oral health consequences for your child, including tooth misalignment that may require orthodontic treatment to fix.

Our priority is to provide exceptional preventive care, including cleanings, dental exams, fluoride applications, and dental sealants for your child at our Apple Valley dental office.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry

young boy playing with toy on the floor | pediatric dentist apple valley mnIt's important to preserve the structure of baby teeth for as long as possible. If your child has a cavity, we will talk with you about options to fix his or her tooth. We are happy to offer minimally invasive dentistry whenever possible.

For very young or anxious children who cannot tolerate routine treatment, the Hall technique allows placement of a silver crown on a baby molar without the need for numbing or drilling. Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF, is a liquid that is painlessly brushed onto a cavity to help prevent the progression of decay.

Minimally invasive dentistry often allows us to treat our very young or very anxious patients safely and effectively, while avoiding the consequences of untreated cavities such as pain and infection which can require general anesthesia in the dental office or operating room.

Interceptive Orthodontics

The American Academy of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. Some children benefit from interceptive orthodontic treatment at this age to correct a growth issue and get their dental development back on track. And since Dr. Katie is an orthodontist as well as a pediatric dentist, your child will benefit from her extensive training and expertise!

Parent Education

We encourage you to use us as a resource, and at Carousel Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we are always happy to take the time to answer your questions. A significant part of helping your child maintain a healthy smile is educating you, the parent, about matters their oral health needs, and helping you understand what to expect throughout their different stages of dental development.

Nitrous Oxide

Dentistry can be stressful for a child, and our goal is to do whatever we can to help him or her have a comfortable, positive, and pain-free experience with us. Nitrous oxide gas is a type of mild dental sedation that is perfectly safe for children when administered by our pediatric dentists.

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is blended with oxygen and administered through a small mask that fits comfortably over the nose. Your child will sit back and breathe normally, and as they inhale, they’ll start to feel very relaxed and calm. Nitrous oxide does not put your child to sleep, and he or she will be able to easily hear and respond to any questions or directions.

The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after we stop administering it, so there’s no lingering drowsiness after your child leaves our office. Nitrous oxide is perfect for anxious children, those with special health care needs, or children undergoing certain dental procedures.
