Broken or Chipped Tooth
Accidents and falls are common when children start walking. If they chip or break a tooth, call us first. Acting quickly gives us a better chance of saving the tooth, preventing infection from developing, and minimizing or eliminating the need for complex treatment.
Rinse your child’s mouth with water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If you can find the chipped or broken piece of the tooth, bring it with you to our office.
Toothache
An older child can tell you if a tooth hurts, but your baby or toddler can’t. If they are acting cranky or out of sorts, it could be teething, but it could also be a toothache. White or brown spots near your baby’s gum line can be signs of tooth decay. Also, swelling or a small "pimple" on the gums is a sign of infection.
If you notice any of these symptoms, call our dental office right away!
Knocked-Out Baby Tooth
Call us first and let us know what’s going on. We will determine whether we need to see your child right away and provide instructions for handling the situation. You can rinse your child’s mouth with water and use a cold compress as needed to reduce swelling.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
This is a critical emergency where prompt action can make the difference between saving and losing the tooth! Here is what to do:
- Try not to touch the root of the tooth!
- Rinse the tooth gently in cool water if it’s dirty, but do not disturb any tissue still attached to the root.
- Try to gently reinsert the tooth back in its socket because this gives the tooth the best chance for healing! If you are unable to replace the tooth, put it in a container with cold milk, and if milk’s not available, keep the tooth root moist with your child’s saliva.
- Call us so we can prepare for your child’s arrival and then make your way safely to our office.
The window to successfully re-implant a tooth is less than two hours, so prompt action on your part is essential.
