When a child experiences a dental emergency, it can be frightening and stressful for everyone involved, and it’s important you act quickly. Carousel Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics offers emergency dental care for children of all ages, and we have experience handling several different kinds of dental emergencies.

Common Dental Emergencies

Many children are inquisitive and tend to stick things in their mouths that don’t belong there. This can result in an object getting stuck in their teeth, damaging their teeth or gums, tooth pain, and more.

Whether a piece of hard candy gets lodged between your child’s teeth or their tooth falls out from a sports-related injury, we are always here to help!

Common dental emergencies children experience include:

#1 Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child’s tooth is knocked out (avulsed), quickly retrieve it without touching the tooth's root. Rinse the tooth in water to clean it off and place it in a clean container of milk and contact our office immediately. If we act quickly, we may be able to save the natural tooth and replace it in its socket.

#2 Chipped, Broken, or Fractured Tooth

A chipped, broken, or fractured tooth can be painful and mar your child’s smile. If the break is deep, it can even cause nerve damage, so it’s important to call us immediately. If you locate the broken piece of tooth, bring it with you to your emergency dental appointment.

#3 Bitten Lip or Tongue

Children learning to walk may fall and bite their lip or tongue, or your young athlete may experience this during a sporting event. If the bite is severe enough to cause bleeding, clean the area with water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Call us so we can determine how serious the damage is. If it’s a serious injury, we recommend that you go to the nearest hospital.

#4 Persistent Toothache

A persistent toothache can point to several dental concerns, including a cavity or infection. If your child complains of a toothache, please contact us to pinpoint the origin of the pain, alleviate their discomfort, and provide the appropriate treatment.
