As a parent, you want to give your child a healthy start, and good oral hygiene begins before the first tooth appears. At Carousel Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we help families understand how to care for their children’s teeth and gums at every stage.
When Should I Start Caring for My Baby’s Mouth?
You can begin caring for your baby’s mouth before their first tooth erupts. After feedings, gently wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, warm, moist washcloth. This removes bacteria and helps your baby become comfortable with having their mouth cleaned.
Once your baby’s first tooth appears, start brushing twice a day. Use a small, soft-bristled infant toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. For children younger than three, use a rice grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste. For children ages three to six, use a pea-sized amount. Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste as they develop that skill.
How Should I Brush My Baby’s Teeth?
Gently brush all tooth surfaces using small, gentle motions. Focus on the areas where teeth meet the gums, where plaque can collect. Brush for about two minutes in the morning and again before bedtime.
As your child grows, allow them to participate in brushing. If your child wants to brush independently, let them take the first turn, then brush their teeth yourself to make sure you clean areas they may miss.
How Long Should I Help My Child Brush?
Young children often lack the fine motor skills needed to clean their teeth thoroughly. Continue helping your child brush until around age 8. Even after your child starts brushing independently, supervise their technique and help when needed.
You should also help your child floss once their teeth begin touching. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits help establish healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
When Should My Baby Have Their First Dental Visit?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit a pediatric dentist when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday. Early visits allow your dental team to monitor development, identify potential concerns, and give you personalized guidance about brushing, fluoride, nutrition, and other aspects of infant oral care.
