Dental sealants have been around since the 1960s; these thin, plastic protective coatings are ideal for filling in the deep grooves of your child’s teeth, blocking cavity-causing bacteria.
How Dental Sealants Work to Protect Teeth From Decay
Dental sealants are quick and easy to apply, and they offer lasting protection against tooth decay. Because your child’s molars are uneven and have deep grooves, food particles and bacteria often get trapped, and this can lead to cavities.
However, once we apply dental sealants, it smooths those tooth surfaces, making them easier to keep clean and helping your child avoid more extensive dental work.
The Best Age and Timing for Children to Get Sealants
We usually recommend dental sealants as soon as your child’s permanent teeth emerge; this offers the best protection when they’re more likely to get cavities.
- Between the ages of 6 and 7, we use sealants on the first permanent molars.
- Between the ages of 11 and 13, we use sealants on the second permanent molars.
