My child has a toothache, should I take him/her to the ER?

NO! Unless your child has a fever and/or significant facial swelling, the ER is not the first place you want to go. Typically, the medical team at the ER is not trained to diagnose and treat dental emergencies, leading to frustration for patients and families (and the ER team!). However, if dental trauma happens along with a serious injury to the head or neck, or a loss of consciousness, it is important to seek emergency medical care first prior to addressing the dental injury.
