At Carousel Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend eating a light meal prior to your child’s dental visit. Children that will be administered nitrous oxide (laughing gas) do NOT have any pre-treatment restrictions from eating or drinking.
What Type Of Meal Should My Child Eat Prior?
However, we do recommend avoiding a heavy, greasy meal such as fast food prior to your child receiving nitrous oxide, as this can cause nausea and vomiting. Children who receive local anesthetic (“Novocain”) should be monitored closely for 3-4 hours after the appointment, as they are at risk for biting the numbed lip, cheek or tongue. However, if your child will be undergoing general anesthesia for dental treatment, please refer to the NPO guidelines in the FAQ under Sedation Dentistry.
