3 Types of Interceptive Orthodontics

Interceptive orthodontics is an early intervention approach designed to guide proper dental and jaw development in children, usually before all their permanent teeth have erupted. The goal of interceptive orthodontics is to detect and address problems early and minimize or even eliminate the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment down the road.

Here are three common types of interceptive orthodontics used to create healthier, better-aligned smiles from the start.

1. Palatal Expanders

These appliances gently widen the upper jaw in children with narrow mouths. A palatal expander opens space in the jaw over time, allowing for better alignment of incoming permanent teeth and improved bite function.

2. Space Maintainers

When a baby tooth is lost prematurely, neighboring teeth can shift into the vacated space. Space maintainers can cause crowding or alignment issues as a child’s jaw develops. A space maintainer holds that gap open to ensure proper permanent tooth eruption.

3. Early Braces or Limited Phase 1 Braces

In some cases, children need partial braces on specific teeth to correct early alignment problems or bite issues. These early or " limited phase 1” braces can reduce treatment time and complexity when full braces are needed later.

What Can Interceptive Orthodontics Help Treat?

Interceptive treatment is designed to correct or prevent a wide range of issues, including:

  • Crossbites or underbites
  • Narrow or crowded arches
  • Protruding front teeth
  • Thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits
  • Premature loss of baby teeth
  • Speech or chewing difficulties
  • Airway obstruction or mouth breathing

By addressing these problems early, interceptive orthodontics supports healthier development and often leads to more stable, long-term results.

At Carousel Pediatric Dentistry, our family-friendly dental team, led by Dr. Katie Nordeen, believes that early intervention sets the stage for a lifetime of confident smiles. If your child is around age seven or showing signs of misalignment, it might be time for an orthodontic evaluation.
