Common Orthodontic Issues For Children

Some children have orthodontic issues, such as a bite problem, that can progressively worsen with time if no treatment is performed while the child is growing. We treat these children with limited orthodontic care, often called early interceptive orthodontic treatment, typically around eight years of age.

For example, if a child’s jaw isn’t large enough to accommodate all of his or her permanent teeth, we might recommend interceptive orthodontics in Apple Valley. In this case, the goal is to take advantage of the fact that bones and muscles are still developing and use a device like a palatal expander to widen the upper jaw.

Other examples of interceptive orthodontics that re-direct the pattern of the jaw are space maintainers and Herbst appliances. There are also times when we might recommend tooth extraction as the best option to make space in the jaw for a permanent tooth to erupt correctly.

Most children who receive early orthodontic treatment will often benefit from full braces once all of their permanent teeth come in, around 12-13 years of age, to achieve an ideal bite and smile.
