Last month, in the first part of our ultimate guide to children's orthodontics, we looked at the problems that orthodontic treatment helps your child avoid, the different types of braces and clear aligners we offer, and many of the additional advantages of having straight teeth.

This month, in part two of our orthodontic guide, we'll dive deep into the benefits of early orthodontic treatment, the cost of braces and Invisalign, and the pros and cons of braces vs. clear aligners. As always, we encourage you to contact Carousel Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics at (952) 715-6177 if you have questions about Invisalign or braces in Apple Valley, MN.

Early Orthodontic Treatment

Also called "interceptive ortho," early orthodontic treatment benefits kids with overly crowded baby teeth or problems with a severe overbite, underbite, or open bite. These children can benefit from completing their orthodontic treatment in phases. For example, during phase one, in the case of an overly crowded mouth, Dr. Katie will take advantage of your little one's growth to expand their palate and make more space for future adult teeth. In addition, a few braces can help baby teeth move into better positions to allow adult teeth to come in.

This is also a great time to correct bite concerns, which makes the second phase of orthodontic treatment faster, easier, and more efficient. Phase two typically takes place around age twelve or thirteen to finish aligning your son or daughter's teeth.

Not every child is a candidate for early orthodontic treatment. During your child's first orthodontic evaluation, at age seven or eight, Dr. Katie will let you know if they might benefit from interceptive orthodontics.

Braces vs. Invisalign: Which Is Right for Your Child?

Every case is unique, and Dr. Katie will review your child's treatment options during their orthodontic evaluation. For example, kids with complicated bite concerns to correct will typically be better off with traditional braces. At the same time, a straightforward case of aligning crooked teeth can usually be accomplished with Invisalign clear aligners.

Compliance is a critical factor in having success with clear aligners. Kids need to wear them as much as possible, for at least 22 hours each day. They can remove them for meals but have to keep track of them at school during lunch. This may be too much responsibility for some kids, while others do fine with it.

If your child opts for Invisalign in Apple Valley, MN, they'll enjoy these benefits:

  • They're smooth and comfortable to wear.
  • There are no dietary restrictions since aligners are removable for meals.
  • They're virtually invisible since aligners are made of clear, BPA-free plastic.
  • Brushing and flossing are easy without having to work around brackets and wires.

If traditional braces are the right treatment for your son or daughter, here are some of the pros:

  • No worries about losing or breaking clear aligners.
  • Braces can correct complex bite concerns.
  • Dr. Katie offers tooth-colored ceramic braces, which are hardly noticeable.

A beautiful smile gives your child the confidence they need to reach their goals and achieve their dreams! Dr. Katie will help you find the right personalized orthodontic treatment for your son or daughter.

How Much Do Braces and Invisalign Cost?

This is hard to answer because every child has their own unique needs. For example, a little one with interceptive orthodontic treatment will have a different cost than a child who only needs one phase of treatment.

Dr. Katie recommends that your little one has their first ortho evaluation at around age seven or eight. Starting early gives us the advantage of being able to treat your child in phases if they have complex bite issues or overly crowded teeth. If your child doesn't need early orthodontic treatment, Dr. Katie will reevaluate their smile around the age of 11 or 12.

During your child's evaluation, Dr. Katie gathers information through an examination, x-rays, and photos. She uses this information to create a personalized treatment plan for your child. She will also tell you what to expect during their orthodontic treatment, how to take care of their teeth at home, how long treatment will take, and how much it will cost.

Fitting Orthodontic Treatment Into Your Budget

Drs. Kyle and Katie understand that the cost of orthodontic treatment can be a concern for some families. However, we believe every child deserves to have a beautiful smile. We're happy to work with families to find creative ways to fit their child's orthodontic treatment comfortably into their budgets.

We accept several types of dental insurance, many of which offer an orthodontic benefit that can help defray the cost of orthodontic treatment. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you determine if your plan has an orthodontic benefit for your child and how much it might pay. We're also happy to file claims with your insurance company on your behalf.

Third-party financing companies like CareCredit can also help parents break the cost of more extensive treatment like braces into affordable monthly payments that don't break the bank. CareCredit even has interest-free plans for patients who qualify, and you can apply for them online or at our dental office. In addition, they provide a quick response, so you don't have to delay your son or daughter's new smile.

Dr. Katie also offers complimentary orthodontic evaluations for every kid at Carousel Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, so taking the first steps towards your child's straighter, more beautiful smile is easy!
